Review of Surveillance (2008) by Heather M — 19 Feb 2013
I'm being generous in four stars, because the twist, which was too obvious, deadened the pace thereafter and - above all - required far too much suspension of disbelief, was ludicrous. What I like to call the High Tension factor. However, the first 1 hr and 12 minutes are near perfect; controlled, blackly humorous and laugh out loud funny, tense, scary and visceral. Props to the great performances and beautiful photography too.
EDIT. Second time around I enjoyed this film even more, and found the twist works better in hindsight - there are actually lots of clues at the beginning. It's not any less ridiculous - just because there is foreshadowing doesn't mean it necessary works - but it I found that I was able to watch the whole film without feeling like Jennifer Lynch was trying too hard.
