Review of Surveillance (2006) by Chad O — 12 Jan 2010
Mystery/thriller directed by Jennifer Lynch, dughter of David Lynch, that proves genetics can't pass along talent.
2 FBI agents (Julia Ormand and one of my personal LEAST favorites Bill Pullman) come to investigate what appear to be serial murders in a small rural town. The witnesses are a junkie, a small child and a freaked out corrupt officer.
It's mostly told in flashback while the witnesses are under questioning and the story unfolds in a non-linear fashion.
The "twist" ending as touted on the back of the box isn't nearly as shocking or cool as I'll bet the filmmakers thought it was and doesn't promoting a twist ending basically destroy the point of one? Because until that point you're basically just waiting for that to occur and not really paying as much attention to the film as you should. Or is that just me?
Anywho, I will give the film credit for some unconventional casting that actually pays off. Cheri Oteri (SNL) and French Stewart (3rd Rock from the Sun) both play dark dramatic roles and pull them off very well.
And Bill Pullman? Surprise! He fucking sucks.
