Review of Supervixens (1975) by Liam U — 31 Jan 2010
First things first, despite the title, this has bugger all to do with the superior 'Vixen! (1968)' - instead we follow Clint, played by Charles Pitts who does an admirable job as the lead, as he attempts to flee across the country after being set up for his wifes murder.
Charles Napier (excellent in 'One-Eyed Monster (2008)' but not quite given much character development here) is wonderfully psychotic as the cop who attempts to frame Clint. Naturally, with this being a Russ Meyer flick, Clint encounters several big-breasted ladies on his travels.
However, unlike the typical Meyer representation of women, these are often dominated by men, and while still feisty, they tend to find themselves lacking the independence Meyer often grants his female characters.
Despite this, they do all carry over other typical Meyer traits, with them all wanting sexytimes with the leading lad, quite often landing him in more trouble. At times, 'Supervixens (1975)' finds itself dangerously close to wandering into the sexploitation- farce territory (reminiscent of 'Revenge of the Cheerleaders (H.
O.T.S. III) (1976)' in places) with quite a silly soundtrack that adds humour throughout. While there are a couple of rather violent scenes which seem ill-suited for this film, the majority is pretty much what you'd expect from a Russ Meyer feature, yet the story does drag throughout.
While it does pick up fleetingly at times, quite often scenes go on far too long, especially the climax which would definitely have benefitted from a severe trimming. Out of the female stars, the standout has to be Shari Eubank, in a dual role where she excels.
The iconography throughout the film is interesting, it's just a shame it doesn't aid the story in being any more enjoyable. With better pacing this could have been great, but instead it unfortunately borders on watchable.
Definitely not the "cinematic smorgasbord of erotic fantasy" promised by the DVD cover.
