Review of Superman Returns (2006) by Jacob S — 05 Dec 2013

This is the most misunderstood superhero flick of all time. I'm gonna give you the real plot of the film plain and simple. Superman has been searching for krypton for a few years, and returning to earth, he realizes that his personal life is gone. The world is quick to accept superman, but not the most important part of that world to him. It's a realistic take on a character who in the end is more human than kryptonian. He's at first confused by the loss of his lady lane love, then learns to accept it and focus on being the symbol of hope superman, then is given hope that he can still have a personal life outside of just saving peoples lives, in the form of a son. I don't know about you but I think that story is beautiful. Creeping up on Lois? How? By flying around with her and trying to make sense of her rejection of him? I never thought that was creepy. He was lost and confused and had a moment of confused weekness but he was never creepy. Execution/direction? I thought it was fantastic that Bryan Singer worked in that big long Christopher Reeve era homage. I love those two movies. Well, the first two. So in the end this is a story about the hero who's given up so much for others(he's given up Lois not just by trying to save his fellow kryptonians, but by keeping his identity a secret and continuing to save lives). It's about him struggling to accept the life where he just can't get the girl, but redeems him as a man by giving him a second chance giving him a son. The final scene in the movie, superman talking to his son "the son becomes the father.. And the father, the son." I look at man, and said "yep. That's my superman." I think superman fans should give this another viewing, with a different perspective.
