Review of Superman Returns (2006) by Jon N — 19 Aug 2013
Singers attempt to resurrect superman fails to fly but the core structure is right on the money. The first thing that singer delivers us are the correct credits and theme tune, the kiss curl hair cut and sign off ending.
Superman first offering is a stunning return to form. Unfortunately the Lex Luther and non descripts fail to come close to hackmans performances. The big gamble is the story of his return and the birth of his son, both fail to work and leave the watchers saying when, what, how? Singer would have been better taking a leaf out of superman 4 and introduced us to a badie with equivalent powers.
The Lex story works ok and probably could have been excellent if Hackman and Beatty would have played it out.. Routh does a very good reeve but needed a little more freedom, from his test screening he appears to have nailed the roll which never transpires into the movie once the filming begins.
In all, a bit of trimming and a lot of re-casting and the injection of a super badie instead of the miss placed son story and they would have had a winner.
