A movie that is just as fresh and iconic as it is truthful and respectful towards its roots. "Superman Returns" is a spectacular and breathtaking opus of epic proportions that values great storytelling above fancy catchphrases and moscular showdowns.
The titular hero is what he was always meant to be, and he is astoundingly portrayed by the very talented Brando Routh, who does not only look like Christopher Reeve's Superman - he also posesses the same inherent likability and physical shape of the father of all superheroes, which makes him the perfect choice for the role.
Apart from that, the visuals are stunningly captivating, and not once do the filmmakers use the CGI-technology as a cheap gimmick to deliver quick arousement in form of junk-food effects, which ultimately makes it significantly smarter and more clever than the average superhero blockbuster.
The film consistently maintains a perfect balance between grand-scale action-sequences - most of which are among the most memorable in the history of superhero cinema - and deeply emotional, character-driven moments of volnerability and innermost human feelings.
By the end of the movie, the themes and the message will be firmly imprinted in your brain, and they will stick with you long after the end-credits. "Superman Returns" is one of the rare blockbusters that actually have something to say rather than something to show, and that is exactly why it ends up being the ultimate and quintessential superhero-experience.
Other of its kind should follow its blueprint ,and quite fortunately they have.
