Review of Superman Returns (2006) by Felipe C — 13 Jan 2014

A lot of people dislike the movie for what it was intended to be, a Christopher Reeves style Superman. Going forth, I thought Bryan Singer did a creative job paying homage to the original franchise. The characters worked perfectly for the 1970s Superman feel.

The theme, the uniform and even the script. Reflecting upon it now, it's a movie meant for a different decade in the current time period. Different values and different standards for film made film disappointing to a lot of people.

I thought Brandon Routh did an amazing job being the Superman Singer intended him to be. Lex Luthor's real estate power craze was a little disappointing because it displays the boring static villains DC has sadly portrayed.

There is no complexity which was probably the major underlying fault. The only character with complexity is James Marsden, which plays a husband to Lois, who we all know that she is still in love with Superman.

There was a clear amount of cheese in this film but I can overlook it as a sendoff to a beloved franchise (at least the first two films). Overall I was okay with the film and even appreciated it as a reminiscence of one of franchise that defined movies (only the first two.

.. the third and fourth films do not exist). I gave it three stars, which is considerably high for a film that people see as a crappy Superman film. The film is a nostalgia factor and the proper send off for the Christopher Reeve version of Superman.
