Review of Superman III (1983) by Shane M — 02 Feb 2014
What is this? Why is the tone comedic and campy? Why does the film use and overuse slapstick and sight gags? Why is Richard Pryor in here, and why does he have more screen time than Christopher Reeve? And finally, why is there a dark, corrupted Superman in it, despite the fact that Reeve did good in that role? Superman lll follows an unemployed man named Gus Gorman finding a job as a computer technician, and the boss of the company hires him to do criminal work in order to take over the world.
And of course, Superman interferes with their plans, but gets out of control when exposed to custom-made Kryptonite. Writers David and Leslie Newman destroy a great film series just by adding campiness and comedy that feels dated, and situations that feel unrealistic even by Superman standards.
In fact, the whole movie feels unrealistic anyway, and it feels recycled from the other films. Why the film feels unrealistic is also thanks to director Richard Lester, failing to bring this awful movie to life.
The recycled content is the plot points, visual effects, and attempted acts of evil. But, the worst thing of all is Richard Pryor, not only for his casting, but his awful performance as Gus Gorman. Superman III also has its share of cheap laughs, meaning you might laugh, but overall hate the jokes.
But, there is something good about this film, and that is Christopher Reeve's performance as the dark Superman, and the junkyard battle between the evil Superman, and Clark Kent. But that's it, and has an awful score by Giorgio Moroder.
Never see this (why was it in TV anyway), EVER!!!!!!!
