Review of Superman: Doomsday (2007) by Jason R — 15 Sep 2010
SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY is the animated Superman movie for our time. It's edgy, compelling, cinematic, action-packed, and badass. From the get-go, you can tell from the title that someone has to die in DOOMSDAY. And there's also a creature named Doomsday, and Lex Luthor is still as diabolical as ever. Based on the famous and multi-award winning saga of a different name (it would be wrong to name it, because the name in itself is a spoiler!), DOOMSDAY is able to condense the series into a very watchable result.
With three directors helming DOOMSDAY, incuding UNDER THE RED HOOD's Brandon Vietti, Warner Bros. animation and DC lets the audience in that they're going to see a different kind of Superman film. The animation of the characters and the destruction is more realistic and detailed as recent DC/Warner Bros. films, yet the sound effects really hit home the emotional effects of the animation.
As for the actors: Adam Baldwin as Superman, Anna Heche as Lois Lane, John DiMaggio as Toyman, and James Marsters as Lex Luthor lend their talented voices to these well-loved (and hated) characters. The actors gave their all in delivering the story's impact to the viewer, making the film an emotional as well as whoa! experience. Especially when the creature named Doomsday comes knocking, the plot grabs you and doesn't let go until the finale finishes.
If you've read the graphic novel series, then good for you. If not, you're in for an edgy, compelling, cinematic, action-packed, and badass Superhero film that doesn't care that's animated: it cares that it tells one of Superman's most definitive stories, thematically and visually.
