Review of Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (2010) by Erno K — 12 Nov 2010

This is the worst entry in the recent DC and Marvel animated movie influx. I would even say it's the first one that is more bad than good.

Once again the animation itself looks very cheap. The characters are angular and all the male characters look the same, as do all the female ones. It's like they have a mold that they use for all characters and then just slightly change the hairstyle or costume to get the distinction.

Even that wouldn't be a problem, but the story is weak this time around. It feels rushed and makes a little sense to me. I am also starting to hate the comic book practice of not ever getting any permanent resolutions. The villains are just transported to somewhere else or they leave, never are they just killed. This is quite stupid, as the same characters pop up after a certain time, until they are vanquished, after which they will just return in the future. No major character ever dies in comics!

I get that Superman would be a hard thing to erase for example, but many of the villains could be put to rest, no matter how awesome they are. They are constantly coming up with new ones anyway. Where do they put all of them soon?

The fights between the myriad characters are mostly pretty cool, which is the saving grace of the film in my book. Otherwise I would have been asleep before the end. Some of the dialogue is really bad as well, and I think this is the first time I noticed something like this in these newer animated movies.

Anyways, DC fanboys probably love this movie no matter what, but as a neutral observer of sorts (More of a Marvel guy myself, although Batman kicks ass) I didn't get as much out of it as I would have hoped. And I really liked the previous Batman animated movie, so it's not like I can only enjoy a Marvel universe flick. Well, there is plenty more where these came from, so let's just wait for the next one to arrive.
