Review of SuperFly (2018) by Anthony K — 29 Aug 2018
In spite of some silly acting (you get the sense that they stretched in order to find gorgeous mixed girls to do some reaction takes), ridiculous dialogue, and the weirdest sex scene in recent memory, Superfly entertains.
It's a prototypical tale of drugs and vice. but distinguishes itself just a LITTLE bit by starting in media res. Or maybe, rather, at the end of a story (even if the horrifically green screened pre credits tag suggests something otherwise), which gives this tale a sort of an Unforgiven / Logan vibe.
Thanks to some really charming supporting characters and interesting looking shots from Director X, Superfly manages to just succeed despite itself. And yeah, the fact that it's a black led, R Rated blockbuster doesn't hurt - if nothing else, the audience craves something DIFFERENT.
