Review of Super Fly (1972) by Todd L — 15 Feb 2010
I maybe in the minority, but I really dislike these Scarface/Little Cesar folk heroes and I kinda wish the script treated Ron Oâ??Nealâ??s dopefiend Priest more in the pathetic spirit of Curtis Mayfieldâ??s Super Fly soundtrack than this phoney cool cat pimp daddy vibe.
Really, the best thing about this movie are Mayfieldâ??s songs and songwriting; the title track and â??Pusher Manâ?? show Priest as the wannabe Mack loser he is. Now, getting off my soapbox, Ron Oâ??Neal can really show anger and desperation as Priest.
Julius Harris is solid as always as Priestâ??s main man short order cook. And Iâ??m always a sucker for a slo mo fist fight. Not the Blaxploitation King of Kings that some people think, but some solid performances make it watchable.
