Review of Super 8 (2011) by Jordan K — 06 Sep 2014
Abrams and Spielberg come together to make an intriguing junior sci-fi film about a group of kids surviving their town in a war zone state and saving their friends. I wanted to see Super 8 when it first came out in theaters, I just got the chance now, and it wasn't bad, but just kinda meh.
A group of kids that you can easily compare to those of South Park and especially The Goonies prepare to make their own horror movie for a film festival when witnessing a crazy train crash that puts the entire town in a sudden state of fear when numerous suspicious activities occur. Soon enough the town is being attacked by a giant underground creature as it son turns into a war zone, with the military being involved and families in a state of shock. It's interesting, but honestly after a while I'd like to see the kids just make movies rather than what I described, it's not as interesting as it sounds.
Super 8 can be really boring at times - any part with the military is a sleeper and some parts are really not needed, such as the feud between main character Joe's father and Joe's crush Alice's father. The kids aren't bad but easily forgettable performances, nothing special, but a lot better than most child actors. It's odd and somewhat interesting to see how far the plot went, you'd expect nothing like what happened in the end to happen in the beginning. Super 8's not bad, but you'll forget about it in a month. Abrams has had better, Spielberg has a lot better.
