Review of Super (2010) by Dann M — 21 Jan 2012
Super is a disturbing and gritty look at the superhero mythos. When Frank's wife leaves him to go back with her criminal ex-boyfriend, Jacques, he decides to become a superhero in order to free her form Jacques's grasp.
Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page lead the cast as eccentric and slightly disturbed outsiders who step out of reality to become "superheroes." The film is brutal in its depiction of violence, as people's heads are bashed in with a wrench and are impaled by 6 in.
razor claws. But despite the film's edginess, the story is rather mundane and the satire gets stale after a while. Super is an awkward, but interesting look at the harsh reality of crossing the line into vigilantism.
