Review of Super (2010) by John R — 27 Jan 2012
Was expecting a comedy from the trailer, but unless your completely sadistic, it can be difficult to find that many parts in the film that are actually funny. While the end does save it from being extremely sad, the bloody and (kind of) realistic view of Kick-Ass (that's what it is in many ways) quickly becomes depressing, as you realise that Frank is actually a very sad psychopath and his sidekick is actually a pretty terrifying character (with a pretty refreshing performance from Ellen Page).
Overall, definitely not what I was expecting, and while it can be seen as a dark comedy at times, as the film continues and feel more sympathetic towards Frank's desperate mission to 'save' his wife, it generally comes off as a really depressing film. Fortunately, the ending is very heartfelt and alleviates a lot of the sadness the film generates across it's majority.
Worth watching, but don't expect a superhero comedy.
