Review of Super (2010) by Alex H — 23 Dec 2012
When Super isn't being flatly gory, it's just kinda middling around as a kinda flavorless real life superhero comedy drama thing. There are a few hilarious lines, I guess, but it's mostly just boring.
The real problem however is how Gunn attempts to construct Super's tone. Using a mix of explicit violence and comedy to commentate on pop culture's tendency for mixing explicit violence and comedy is a balancing act and I think Super falls flat on its face.
Satire doesn't have to be repugnant and boring (and it can be neither).
