Review of Super (2010) by Andres B — 30 Jan 2013
Plot: ''After his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, though he lacks for heroic skills.''.
Does the above sound somewhat familiar? Poor man's ''Kick-Ass''. Whereas I enjoyed the violent bliss of ''Kick-Ass,'' this movie just made it into a morbid experience. There is no underlying theme of any sort. Nothing redemptive about it at all. The same could be said for ''Kick-Ass,'' although you can probably argue there was a motif of self-discovery/coming-of-age in that (satirically speaking). If the same was intended here, well, it fails. It had some okay performances, but by the end credits, there was not a single personality that I could embrace. Contrast that to the ending of ''Kick-Ass,'' for which I was in absolute bliss with my charismatic heroes; I was practically hugging myself. It's also not very funny. ''Super'' is an inferior superhero black comedy. So shallow, so empty -- it almost makes me sad. It sucks.
