Review of Super (2010) by Geoff B — 17 Jul 2013
This 2010 offering really took me by surprise and bounded into the number 10 spot of my favourite films of that year. The more times I watch this the darker the comedy becomes, the more I reflect on the characters.
Yes - its not as pristine as the big budget Kick-Ass but this is something quite different. Rainn Wilson is the star here - I went through a range of laughs but always with a nervous edge as the subject matter handled is ultimately quite downbeat.
When Frank sees his ex-addict girlfriend go off with a drug dealer and leaves him he is certain she has been kidnapped and in his complete grief and depression he styles himself as a makeshift superhero - with one thing in mind.
Save the girl and bring her home. Frank becomes the Crimson Bolt. Armed with a wrench, and a teenage sidekick played annoyingly by Ellen Page - Boltie, they go on a fool hardy mission to get the girl.
Unpredictable, shocking in parts, darkly funny, this film, although not to everyone's comedy tastes, certainly ticked all my boxes. Shut Up Crime!
