Review of Sunshine Cleaning (2008) by Jeff H — 30 Jul 2011
I feel like this is a movie that alienated its "target" audience and never found the real one. I remember it being marketed as a total chick flick comedy, the kind of audience of moms that would have loved it had it been rated PG/PG-13 and had more cheesy humor.
Oh, and the girls would have met the right men and fallen in love and had all their problems solved by their Prince Charmings. The end. This ain't Disney, folks. It's an R-rated indie film, which means lots of adult language and tough, mature issues that don't necessarily wrap up in a neat little package.
Thanks to great performances from the always lovely Amy Adams and Emily Blunt, we're given an emotional story of a couple of people who are just trying to make it in the world. If you're looking for a Julia Roberts movie, go watch a stupid Julia Roberts movie and feel good about the 2 hours you've wasted escaping reality with nothing to show for it.
This has more grit and realism to it, and can much more uplifting than the same old "girl meets men of her dreams and is saved from her miserable, lonely life" story that housewives seem to eat up at the box office.
