Review of Sunshine (2007) by Allan W — 02 Jul 2012
***Mild Spoiler Alert*** The film makes a great start but then sort of just drifts off. To begin with, the actors are nothing special, but still rather good. The plot, however, to put it lightly, is just plain weird.
Not the whole saving the earth thing by rejuvenating the sun thing, but rather the direction that the plot takes towards the end. The parts closest to the end seriously made me think of Friday the 13th because people were getting slashed pretty much left and right.
(That is a slight over-exaggeration on my part for dramatic purposes.) The set is nothing to write home about. Think early Star Trek and that's basically how it looks. Finally, my main gripe with the film: the assumption that engineers of the future are idiots.
The computer for all I can guess was running Windows 98 considering how poorly it was running. Also, the entire spaceship itself was just a crappy design. Half the plot problems could've been avoided if the movie makers had actually realized that engineers are (usually) not idiots.
(and especially not when the entire fate of the world is in their hands).
