Review of Sunshine (2007) by Dc E — 07 Feb 2012
Ever watch a movie and it is cruising along as one of the best things you have seen in a while ... and then ... suddenly ... an odd plot twist gets interjected into the story and the entire thing goes downhilll from there?
That sums up "Sunshine" nicely.
Starting off with a great setup and awesome characters, "Sunshine" gets your interest right away. a group of astronauts are hurtling through space on what is essentially a giant bomb designed to kick start our dying sun. Before they reach their destination, they get a distress call from a previous vessel that had failed to carry out its mission. After some debate, they decide to go off course to obtain the bomb the other ship is carrying ... the idea being that two shots at this is better than one.
Obviously, all Hell breaks loose from there or there wouldn't be much of a movie. :P.
But then, as you're settling in to what was becoming a truly great movie .. they change it up. Out of the blue, your gripping sci-fi drama becomes a nonsensical slasher film complete with slow moving bad guy ... how awesome is THAT, right?
It's not, actually ... it's not awesome at all.
While I give "Sunshine" a decent rating, it is mostly on the strength of the buildup. The endgame was severely lacking and had they stayed on course this would have been a 4-5 star flick.
