Review of Sunset Boulevard (1950) by Jason M — 03 Jun 2009
I cant give this the glowing recommendation of some, but it does have a lot going for it. Firstly it carries Billy Wilder's stamp with beautiful cinematography, creating wonderful framed images, and using light in a subtle but elegant manner.
This is coupled with a delightful script that plays to the strength of it actors and presents a very real view of Hollywood and commercialism, and the powerful effect of adoration and material satisfaction on the soul.
In another way it is also a look at our modern cult of youth, with a women who refuses to age. Age is the enemy, not the natural progression and must be hidden, disguised and escaped. Gloria Swanson gives a powerhouse performance that leaves the audience exhausted while Nancy Olson and William Holden offer a nice balance in rather natural characters.
