Review of Sunset Boulevard (1950) by Kenneth B — 07 Dec 2010
I bought this on DVD a few years ago and it's taken me this long to get around to watching. Shame on me! This is wonderfully entertaining yet dark, striking and perhaps even shocking. From where I sit, Sunset Boulevard is a flawless portrait of Hollywood excess embodied in the tragic figure of Norma Desmond.
William Holden's Joe Gillis is just as spot on as the struggling screenwriter. His voice over is wonderfully descriptive yet concise and it is an example of the little things which make this such a great film to watch.
I went into SB with limited knowledge, I'll admit that, but I cant help thinking that I came out the other side having watched one of the best films ever, certainly of it's kind.
