Review of Sunset Boulevard (1950) by Gemini F — 12 Apr 2010
A hack writer ignites hope in the heart of an old diva(Gloria Swanson) to return to the limelight of Hollywood once again, with devastating results for both of them.
I'm not always that impressed with older movies. Night of the Hunter for example neither scared me,nor made me feel to much. But Sunset Boulevards portrayal of a female former star of Hollywood is superb. She doesn't realize that her time has come and gone. Her own bloated self-image slowly driving her mad. I don't know if Gloria Swanson got an oscar for her role, but in my opinion she certainly should have!
I also liked the use of the secluded mansion, implying a distance from the real world. And of course the DOPs near perfect application of light and shadows onto Gloria Swansons face, amplifying the characters every emotion from pride,to happiness,to madness.
