Review of Sunrise (1985) by Jack W — 15 Jul 2009
Ever since Brad Pitt saw his first sunrise in 150 years I have wanted to see this film. To me the film is all about transitions. Murnau's transition from UFA to Hollywood, from Expressionism to the Hollywood Studio system.
It also is about transitions from rural society to urban, the transitions to marriage and within marriage and the transitions of humans between being themselves and becoming monsters. Technically Murnau is a genius.
The cinematography and sound design is great and his very limited use of intertitles makes this silent film flow so much better. His use of sound lyrically and in place of the titles just improves the film so much.
I was also very impressed with the editing. The performances are what they are but the symbolism of the city girl as a vampiric creature is done very well and Janet Gaynor reminds me so much of Drew Barrymore.
Just a great film and I recommend it to anyone!
