Review of Sunrise (1985) by Camden N — 01 Mar 2010
An extraordinary movie. At first I questioned some of Murnau's plot choices, but I realized why things needed to be the way they were near the end of the movie. While I do have a very minor quibble with the end of the film, I'd still say this is a pretty damn good movie and still a very powerful one. Why, even the comedy has aged well!
And some of those long takes were pretty ballsy - there's one near the beginning that, combined with the moody lighting/visuals, was particularly striking. Who knows what Murnau might have accomplished had he not died so young....
