Review of Sunrise (1985) by Ibrahim E — 25 Oct 2011
While watching Sunrise, one cannot help being astonished by just how powerful silent cinema could be though visual means. The elaborate set pieces and especially the cinematography looked so much ahead of its time that I couldn't believe I was witnessing a pre-1930 work.
Its technical marvels successfully complement the heartfelt portrayal of the lovers and carry them to the forefront. The decision to leave its characters nameless and choosing to shoot some particularly symbolic imagery were key to achieving a crucial sense of representation.
This is probably why it can still resonate with viewers 84 years later.
