Review of Sunday in the Park with George (1986) by Valerie — 26 Sep 2004

[color=lemonchiffon] I checked out "Sunday in the Park with George" from the good ol' community library this weekend. For those who might not know, this isn't some independent movie, but rather a movie of a taped Broadway play. A good play, little on the different side, but a bad taping. However, as an actor I feel that every taping of live theatre is bad. Far cry from seeing any theatre in person. [/color].

[color=#fffacd] Anyway, like every UW-Stout Intro to Theatre student, I had seen clips of the show (which I think were probably the best parts). Plus, I hadn't heard of any community or touring theatre group putting this one on, so I decided that I'd better try and see it on tape. Here's how I broke it down.[/color].

[color=#fffacd]Set--Incredibly creative and simple[/color].

[color=#fffacd] There's no doubt Stephen Sondheim kicks arse as a musical writer, but in comparison to some of his other work, I wouldn't say this play is his best. A great tribute to the toil of those in artistic professions. Couple of solid songs. However, I would be afraid to see any community theatre try to tackle it, too different from typical musicals.[/color].

[color=lemonchiffon] On a side note. Who knew libraries had movies, right? I had heard the rumor, but never believed it till I saw it with my own eyes. It seems my library has foolishly fallen for the "Why read the book when you can rent the movie?" motto. Blast the Crookston librarians for being so gullible. Hooray for free rentals of B-level movies!! [/color].
