Spike Lee takes a nostalgic look back at NYC when it was in debt, crime-ridden, and stalked by a serial killer known as the "Son of Sam." This is also the era of Studio 54 (so there is a lot of Disco on the soundtrack) and the CBGB (but not a lot of Punk on the soundtrack).

Spike makes a cameo appearance as an Afro-American yuppie TV reporter. The film does not focus on the police hunt for Sam so much as it focusses on the residents of an Italian-American Bronx neighborhood during the long, hot summer of 1977.

This review of Summer of Sam (1999) was written by on 08 Mar 2009.

Summer of Sam has generally received mixed reviews.
