Review of Summer of Sam (1999) by Jason Y — 17 Aug 2004
Summer of Sam (1999) John Leguizamo, Adrien Brody, Mira Sorvino, Jennifer Esposito, Anthony LaPaglia, Ben Gazzara, Bebe Neuwirth, Patti LuPone, Joe Lisi, Michael Badalucco, Mike Starr, Spike Lee, D: Spike Lee.
Period piece set during the time when N.Y.C. was immersed in fear and paranoia of the serial killer, David Berkowitz, who called himself Son of Sam in the blistering summer of 1977 as an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx look for a suspect.
Audacious and very interesting ?Spike Lee joint? unfortunately becomes mostly unpleasant and sordid after the first hour and runs on much too long, all without reason. Clearly not the film to feel at ease while watching.
Running Time: 142 minutes and rated R for strong graphic violence and sexuality, pervasive strong language and drug use. ** ½.
