Review of Summer of Sam (1999) by Kyle H — 22 Oct 2009
If someone watched "Summer of Sam" and felt like they learned more about sex and sin then the story of the serial killer David Berkowitz, one could certainly forgive them. Lee attempts to branch out from his normal genre and tell the tale of Berkowitz and his terrorizing of New York City in the late 1970's, but the story seems to focus more on the other characters than on Berkowitz himself.
Strong performances by John Leguizamo, Mira Sorvino, Adrien Brody and Jennifer Esposito, but unfortunately they seem wasted due to the overindulgence of Lee on sex scenes and unnecessary sideplots. Not a completely wasted effort by Lee, but one would have to think he could have done much better by simplifying the story and focusing more on what viewers must have been looking for: The story of David Berkowitz.
