Review of Summer Hours (2008) by Izzy N — 25 Jul 2009
A thoughtful film about family possessions and the impact they leave on individuals. These objects hold importance and value to these characters that cannot be appraised, but are they more important to them than the people around them? The film may be about how items affect our memories and take us back to a personal place in time, but I couldn't also help but notice the difference between Frédéric's (Charles Berling) and his daughter's view of the estate: Frédéric wants to save it, keep it just the way it is, so generations to come can live in it and appreciate it as he does; his daughter, in the film's final moments, tells her "sort of" boyfriend one of her memories of her grandmother and her plans for the house.
She seems sad that the house her family loved so much is being sold, but soon wanders off the estate with her boyfriend, eager to explore her future with others rather than stay in a place surrounded by objects and others' memories.
