Review of Summer Hours (2008) by James M — 24 Feb 2010
I was really moved by this film. it's one of true depth and I don't say that about many films. there is a lot going on beneath the surface here - about family and what we leave behind, physically and emotionally.
about globalization, the past and the future. but it's never simplistic, there is a real depth of feeling here and it's imbued with quite a richness. the structure is surprising, in the directions it ultimately heads off in, we're really just given snapshots of certain moments but they have an ultimate weight and purpose.
profoundly poignant at times, this captures something important and somewhat unusual that many of us can relate to.
