Review of Summer Hours (2008) by Matt G — 09 Oct 2011
Nope, it's not about working longer hours during the week and taking Friday off. It's a French film about a family's struggle to settle their late mother's estate. Thankfully the mother was not only an art lover, but an artist's lover, so most of what she owned was not only of sentimental value, but also material value and, well, great art as only the French seem to be able to present it.
This filmmakers took what could have been a story filled with tension and drama, and made more of a subtle statement about sentimental value and loss. Some will love this film, others will be bored waiting for the art to be stolen and the beautiful house to burn down. Spoiler alert: neither happens, so I happened to fall in to the latter category. Beautiful to look at, this film might have been more compelling and entertaining with an overdub of music and no dialog or story.
