Review of Sully (2016) by Tony1984 — 23 Jan 2018
Tom Hanks is one of our greatest ever actors and Clint Eastwood is one of our great directors. But let's be honest this is a very average production. The script really is weak. It squeezes 90 minutes of overwrought melodrama from 30 seconds, disingenuously trying to make bad guys out of the FAA, Their portrayal is a pure fabrication.
Laura Linney ( Is there a charity section in Hollywood to give unwanted actors pointless roles?) on the phone as the wife worrying about their finances (40 year Air Pilots are well off) trying for empathy really grated.
The air steward forcing a guy to jump into the freezing Hudson somehow didn't die and is never mentioned again? The movie is saved despite itself, It was a miracle and the feel good factor of all all 155 surviving a double bird strike on both engines (never happened before at such low altitude) is really good.
A disaster where nobody dies. Feel good CGI and a nice meet with the survivors in the closing credits. Very nice. But they could have done so much better here. Didn’t play to the strengths of the story.
