Review of Sullivan's Travels (1941) by Lauren G — 30 Jul 2007
One of Veronica Lake's best performances, and she's great fun to watch. The film does have its genuinely funny moments. However, I found myself a bit off-put by the "message" of the film.
Certainly it's valuable to make people laugh, but the film's attitude toward poverty is pretty awful, in my opinion. We can see what it's like, maybe give people a hand now and then when we feel like it, but ultimately we're going to make no effort to change the social situation as a whole.
We're just going to distract people for a while.
