Review of Sullivan's Travels (1941) by Simon G — 19 Oct 2009
One of the great American comedies. A solid classic and close to flawless from beginning to end, super-intelligent and very funny, it's easy to see why the Coens dig it so much. Nicely satirizes its target (self-important Hollywood types who are on a mission to save the world) in a way that is never mean-spirited.
The careful balance between comedy and drama is so skillfully handled you never find yourself thinking "Is this a comedy, or a drama?" And the concluding "moral" of the story might seem like a bathetic one, but it is meaningful and true.
..maybe comedies can't save the world but they can make it laugh. And that's not such a bad thing, if that happens to be your job.
