Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Andrew H — 15 Nov 2008
You must have seen the original Sergio Corbucci film "Django" to get some of the references in this movie. This film is more or less a love letter to "Django". Franco Nero is nowhere to be seen, but his beloved character is very much a live. This is basically a prequel to "Django".
Besides that fact it was shot beautifully, and is very westernesque. It has a lot of cool characters, and some really fun situations, the fight sequences are awesome, and some climatic, some anti-climatic, but they all seem to work. The sequence where the leader of the white is shooting his gun into the air after reading the wind direction to hit someone in front of him but far away is pretty awesome.
I think that there is a spot for this is western lover's hearts, but it's not perfect. Just give it some leeway and you will dig it. I still suggest seeing the 1966 "Django" first though. It is a great spaghetti western.
Just a side note... Tarantino is awful in this film, and he is in the opening scene, so get past his silly dialogue and into the meat of the film and you will be much happier.
