Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by David J — 03 Dec 2008
This was pretty good, but not near as good as it should've been.....i'm not sure what it was that threw it off....maybe it was the weird (wrong, IMHO) to film it in english, or perhaps it was including Tarantino in the thing.
...not to mention the whole concept of a self aware japanese, in english homage to an italian in english western remake of a japanese samuria flick is sort of a overly cool idea....i don't know....
.one of the best looking movies Miike has produced but pretty hollow....uninteresting....it was very patch work, from Tarantino's own Death Proof / Kill Bill movies (which already lean heavily on Japanese classic b fare) to Seijun Suzuki's later stuff, to Leone's stuff.
...there were still parts that were Miike, but I didn't really care at that point...and I sort of know what I am talking about having seen 42 films by Miike.
