Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Hiro P — 04 Dec 2008
I'm not really a fence-sitter when it comes to stylized movies. In fact, I love them. Hence the rating here. I think Miike really pulled it off. These two genres have been so closely linked for years, and yet nobody has been able to produce a hybrid that would make any sense. Now, trust me, I realize how unrealistic the entire premise is, but again, it's the style, it's the visuals, and the entire experience that's worth sitting down and watching, not authenticity. If you prefer the latter, don't watch it.
The acting is a little iffy, but not too bad, Considering these are Asian actors reading in English. In fact, their tone gives a nice edge to the dialogue. Familiar sayings sound fresh rather than cliche, and allows you to enjoy the sentiments, rather than cringe at the cheezyness of it.
Oh, on a final note, I love the salute to Cowboy Bebop at the end. Whether it was intentional or not, it was fucking cool, nonetheless. (if you've seen Bebop, you'll know what I'm talking about. if not, stop reading this, and go watch it. hey, I said stop! go on. go watch it. hurry.).
