Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Kurt Y — 24 Dec 2008
Ridiculous and kitschy for all it's worth, that's what this strange homage to the spaghetti western cult classic "Django" is all about. It's hard to take the movie seriously when it features a Japanese cast trying their hardest to speak broken English, but in a sense it fits the mood of the film's references to old italian made westerns, which always featured english and italian actors being dubbed over one way or the other.
Still, the movie looks great, with some of Miike's best visual sensibilities ever put to the screen and the action scenes are top-notch, violent, and explosive. A fun thrill ride that is definitely worth a watch.
