Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Ruby M — 28 Dec 2008
As an avowed Miike fan, it pains me to deliver the verdict on the brave experiment Sukiyaki Western Django: it's more weird than good. Maybe it's the painful, goofy over-acting of Quentin Tarntino, maybe it's how silly and distracting the Japanese actors delivering English dialogue sounds, or perhaps it's just the unsatisfying pay-off.
Whichever way, the film felt like a missed opportunity due to be overrated by genre fans for years to come. Next concoction Mr. Miike, it is no small joy to examine your technicolor wake.
