Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Aaron S — 10 Jan 2009
Why is everyone talking about how the dialogue sounded forced or clunky? Of course it did. It's supposed to be in broken English. I heard a complaint that it's a bunch of western stereotypes. No shit.
The spaghetti western was a rip off of the Japanese samurai film, which was a rip off of the American westerns of John Ford. Why not do a western that takes place in America with Japanese actors to mix it up? Sounds absurd, which is the point.
I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it was quite funny and really fun to watch. It's not my favourite Miike film, but it was still really excellent. I would love a new Japanese or even, Asian franchise of westerns.
So far so good with this and the Good The Bad & The Weird. They reinvented the modern horror film, so why not the modern western?
