Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Ian B — 09 Apr 2009
A surprisingly enjoyable mix of martial arts flicks and westerns from cult director Takashi Miike. It's basically a Japanese remake of A Fistful of Dollars (which itself was a remake of Yojimbo), but Miike brings his unique visual style, love of violence and talent for creating bizarre characters to the mix.
The pace can be a little slow at times and the climax is a bit of a let-down, but I still found this to be a fairly entertaining film thanks to the visual style and interesting performances (especially a bizarre cameo from Quentin Tarantino).
Fans of westerns should enjoy Miike's take on the genre, but the film is definitely not for everyone.
