Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Bobby L — 06 Dec 2009
A rather fun, ridiculous mishmash of western, samurai, and bat-shit insanity. The movie fully embraces it's own artificiality, which makes it all the more fun. Early on, the obviously painted sky background is literally stained with blood, which basically sets the tone up for everything else.
The mainly Japanese actors are all speaking English, some rather well, some pretty broken, but I feel it really helps with all the styles clashing. Also, the costumes are A) stunning and gorgeous, B) a mix between typical western and typical samurai, with a slightly modern edge to them.
The story is nothing new, but the point is how it goes about it, and that the MCGuffin is something so simple and attainable. Plus it pays homages to it's forbearers.
