Review of Suicide Club (2001) by Linda B — 01 Jan 2008
Talk about stupid, Jesus Christ! What starts off as a promising thriller, ends up to be one big, confusing, silly, poorly-acted, poorly-edited mess. The only decent performance of the film is Ryo Ishibashi as the detective in charge of the mass teen suicide case.
As far as the other actors go, they must have taken a course in how not to show emotion. A girl witnesses her boyfriend kill himself and has the same grief I would spilling a carton of Orange Juice. Really, I never understood why Japanese filmmakers feel the need to have their actors be emotion-less.
Was South Park right when they said Japanese people really don't have souls? Well, of course not, but 'Suicide Club' sure as hell isn't doing anything to fight that f__ckin' stereotype.
Although some of the gore is interesting (if not laughably cheesy) and the story had me intrigued at first, there is nothing to like about this mind-less garbage. Grade: D.
