Review of Suicide Club (2001) by Amanda C — 07 Jan 2009
WTF? this is quite possibly THE most f*cked up movie I have ever seen. It starts out wonderful, but then the movie keeps opening up different plot lines that are underdeveloped and never make a strong enough connection to other characters in the movie. It starts with 54 kids commiting suicide by jumping in front of a subway car. Children gleefully kill themselves with wide smiles on their faces. Odd pacing, buckets of blood. This movie sticks with you.
Overall what I got was the social commentary is are you happy with yourself? Do you let others dress, act and think for you? Why are pop groups so popular when they all sound the same? Why would someone want to get false fame (a.k.a. Charles Manson style) for a series of 'suicides'? Would peer pressure force a goup of kids to jump off a school? Is death the final answer when you don't understand the world? If you commit suicide are you freeing yourself, or just connecting your flesh in strips to the ones that preceeded you and will ultimately follow your (un-origional) lead? In the end only you can answer the final question: "Are you connected to yourself?".
