Review of Suicide Club (2001) by Luis V — 08 Dec 2011
Symbolically artistic! Suicide Club, even do it looks like any gore fest, is a film about symbolism and finding the child hidden with in. A large group of girls commit suicide in a subway station, then a couple of nurses commit suicide, then some students in their school do as well. The only clue that they have is this collection of skin pieces and a mysterious caller whom calls herself ?The Bat?. Japan is falling into chaos under these cases of suicides. Who?s the criminal? Is this suicide or murder? Is it a conspiracy? Could have something to do with the band call ?Dessert??
The film is a crime breaking game of puzzles, twists and turns. You think you known who it is but you don?t. I like how they explain of how the ?criminal? uses the internet to make people commit suicide. The internet, as we all know, has made people commit suicide threw the manipulation of other people. It shows of how people shouldn?t be controlled by what other people do on the internet. I like how slow the film works in order to build up tension and makes us keep thinking what goanna happen next. I like the cinematography of this movie. There is one scene in this movie that a woman enters a stage and finds the audience full of children. They ask her if she wants to be connected with herself. This is an important element in the film. Sometimes we are connected to others that we forget to connect with ourselves; sometimes we are so carried away by other things that we don?t connect with the child inside of us. One of the known actors in this movie is Ryo Ishibashi whom is the one whom plays the protagonist in the film Audition. Ryo makes a cool performance in this movie as the detective trying to solve the case and his final stand is really memorable in this movie.
Now the problem with this movie is that there are way too many characters in this movie, the film suffers from character development, we are simply jumping from one character to another that made my head numb. Now when the true masterminds of this entire bloodhound is discovered we are in complete disbelief, seriously we can?t explain how they can pull that off, it doesn?t make any sense. Some of these characters just come and go in this movie and we lack some type of action in this movie. There is a lot of unusable blood in this movie which I have seen it in previous movies like Tokyo Gore Police in which every single character that commits suicide is like they put a bomb on their chest and just blew up instead of simply falling off a building.
The film was directed by Sion Sono, whom is known to be directing controversial movies and making poetry. He is known for making Ekusute, Strange Circus, Love Exposure and Noriko?s Dinner Table. The film gained a considerable amount of notoriety in film festivals around the world for its controversial subject matter and gory presentation, and has since developed a significant cult following. It won the Jury Prize for ?Most Ground-Breaking Film? at the Fantasia Film Festival. The film has left a legacy, the film inspired to make a novel and a manga that follows the film itself. Noriko?s dinner table depicts the events before and after suicide circle.
I can only recommend this movie to the horror fans because I know that they will love the blood and gore. If you like detective films like Silence of the Lambs which is graphic but still entertaining then I will recommend this film for you. Even do there are kids in this movie it is an obvious adult film due to the bloody violent scenes, oh and if you are an animal lover I suggest you don?t watch this movie because animals are brutally murdered in this movie.
