Review of Sugar & Spice (2001) by Miguel F — 16 Aug 2007
The genre of movies involving cheerleading may have taken a turn for the worse with this film. When the head cheerleader gets knocked up by her dumbed down high school quarterback boyfriend, she realizes that they are unable to support themselves so she and her fellow cheerleaders concoct a plan to rob a bank branched in the supermarket where she works, wearing Betty Doll masks.
They prepare themselves and get this idea from watching movies such as "Point Break," "Heat" and "Dog Day Afternoon." That's about as simple and unoriginal as the plot gets.
Why the writers decided to make mention of these films rather than come up with their own ideas is beyond any comprehension since it's just another reminder that "Sugar & Spice" is not even close to being in the same league as any of them.
The movie pretty much has nothing to offer but idiotic moments that give these girls a bad name. Although this movie is labelled as being a dark comedy, the comedy is virtually non-existent. To simply put it, "Sugar & Spice" contains too much sugar and not enough spice in this recipe.
