Review of Sugar & Spice (2001) by Billy B — 09 Sep 2011
Whilst this teen comedy is nothing special, it was funny and witty and is alot better and funnier than majority of the teen films that came out around the same time. Released in 2001 at pretty much the end of the teenage comedy era, the film manages to captivate the audience with hilarious lines and awesome characters. Throughout the film there are alot of dull moments though, wasting time before the conclusion. The ending was good, however the ending was extremely unrealistic, and the whole flashback setting of the film did get quite annoying at times.
The plot is simple and very thin. The cheerleading A-Squad's leader falls pregnant and must find a way to get some money. Her and her four besties plan an elaborate scheme in robbing a bank. The one big problem I had with the plot was that the main theme of robbing the bank was never mentioned until half way through, which somewhat catches the audience off-guard. I loved the Betty masks and outfit for the robbery. It was really cool to to watch.
So many familiar faces in the film. Marley Shelton (Valentine, Scream 4) plays the head cheerleader, and was so dumb she thought she was smart. Fellow Aussie Melissa George (Triangle, The Amityville Horror) plays the stalker obsessed with Conan O-Brien. Her one-liners made her a highlight. Mena Suvari and James Marsden also had roles.
Overall Sugar & Spice is an underrated and relatively unknown teen comedy that is funnier than most, but lacks a solid plot.
